Exist to be used

This is Episode October 21, 2022, from the Voiceover Chat Series. This episode, "Using your stuff to its fullest potential," will enlighten you on how to shift your mindset from “I need more stuff” to “Let’s get rid of this” or “How can I use this more?”

Everything that exists; exists to be used.

I'm talking about products to services…of course, these categories include things like clothes to a subscription plan.

Yep, that includes the “decorative” pillow that nobody can touch. Maybe the vitamins you purchased two months ago but have only taken twice (I’m certainly talking to myself about this), but I digress. It all exists for use, just like you exist to be used.

You might be thinking, “Huh? I am not supposed to be used by somebody!” Let me explain where I am going with this.

Typically, that statement is deemed negative because it may come from someone intending to cause harm, like someone who will use manipulation to get what they want. I am not talking about being used in a way that induces harm, though.

Think about it this way; whether it’s putting our talents, skills, or character traits to use, we allow people to use us for what we offer or bring to relationships, platonic or not. In all relationships, you want something from someone, and they want something from you. In some cases, like parent and child, the child has mandatory needs that are supposed to be fulfilled by the parent. But here’s the kicker, we all still have needs.

We tend to shift those needs to become more and more ‘self-fulfilling’ as we age and lose sight of what we really should be using to its fullest potential - the word of Yahuah, The Most High.

To rely on His Word shows that you need the Word to live out your daily life. It is not so much about what we buy to make our lives “full” because those things come and go. Those things can break and stop working, people can leave, etc., but the word of Yah forever remains. It is my relationship with Yah that pushed me to assess what are all the things that I have around me by asking myself these questions:

  1. What purpose do they serve?

  2. How am I using it to its fullest potential?

Now to flip the script, let’s look at “existing to be used” in another way.

I have many moments where I look around me and scan what I have and what I think I need/desire. I am intentional about doing these scans because I am at a point where I do not want a lot of things in my space that does not make sense, aren’t being used, or do not bring a smile to my face.

Everything I have should exist to be used by me in one capacity or another, and it will either need to bring me happiness or simply make sense to have. I wanted to go beyond the tangible and think about intangible things I use daily, like Netflix or an app on my phone.

I told myself I would start using everything for what it is, and if I’m not using it at all and it doesn’t bring me happiness, then let it go. I probably watched only 15 shows/movies on Netflix last year because I’m not fond of searching for movies and shows outside of my norm. However, since I spend most of my time at home, I figured I might as well expand my entertainment choices and use these apps to their fullest potential. Besides, they keep raising the prices!

Also, at this point in my life, I have become an expert at getting rid of stuff. I can look at something and say, “Wow, I remember when I bought this,” or think about how long I had it, where I had it, all of that, and still be ok with getting rid of it if it is not serving any purpose to me. I had a couple of side tables that I upcycled, sitting in my room with nothing on it, just collecting dust, and I thought to myself, why do I need two side tables giving me no purpose in my bedroom? So, I appreciated my time with them and let them go.

If you don’t think you’re living in clutter, examine what’s around you and see what you have that either doesn’t make sense or doesn’t bring you happiness. Can you let go of anything?
